Continuing Education/ISBE Endorsements

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) issues endorsements on a Professional Educator License (PEL) when certain requirements are met. iSchool coursework is accepted for two ISBE content area endorsements: Library Information Specialist (LIS) and Technology Specialist (TS). To add a PreK - 12 endorsement to a PEL, ISBE requires 24 credit hours of appropriate coursework and a passing score on the related content area test administered by the Illinois Licensure Testing System.

Individuals who are not enrolled in the MS/LIS program may register for classes as continuing education students on a space available basis. All 24 hours of the LIS endorsement may be completed as a continuing education student, but if an individual decides to apply for the MS/LIS at a later date, only 12 hours of classes will transfer toward the degree. The courses must have been taken within the past five years and an A or B must be the final grade for the course. For more information on this option, see Continuing Education.

The following information is specific to the state of Illinois requirements for licensed teachers. We advise out-of-state teachers to contact their state board of education to find out what the requirements are for endorsement as a school library media specialist.
