The Morrill Act at 150: The Future of Public Higher Education

On October 26, 2012, the Office of Public Engagement will sponsor a symposium celebrating the Morrill Act and its continued relevance in shaping the mission of public higher education in the United States. Signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862, the Morrill Act allocated 10,000 acres of federal government land to each state to sell, the proceeds from which were used to establish public colleges.

The symposium will reflect on past achievements of land grant universities and their future role in the twenty-first century. It will include a number of panel sessions as well as campus-wide exhibits (curated by Ryan A. Ross, MS '10). The event is open to the public, and alumni are encouraged to attend.
