1.GSLIS SPOTLIGHT

Wolske recognized for community leadership in East St. Louis

Martin Wolske, senior research scientist at the GSLIS Center for Digital Inclusion, was recently recognized by community leaders in East St. Louis for his years of service-learning work in the region. Wolske was the guest of honor at the 104th Anniversary Dinner of the Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House (LBDNH) on November 9 at the Gateway Center in Collinsville, Illinois. "Through his work at the University of Illinois, Martin has brought 500 students to the Metro East area, creating computer labs at over 70 different locations," said William R. Kreeb, president and CEO of LBDNH, the largest social service provider in the Metro East area serving the community out of multiple locations.

2013 Guide Book to Gift Books now available

The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books has released the 2013 Guide Book to Gift Books. This annual publication highlights over 300 of the best books for giving and receiving, with recommendations for children from birth to high school. "The Guide Book is our chance to draw on our professional expertise in recommending books for the current giving season and well beyond," said Deborah Stevenson, editor of The Bulletin. "Our compact PDF can be printed out or read on your phone, and it's divided by age sections for easier access to the right books for your particular recipient."

Alumni selected as ALA Emerging Leaders

Five GSLIS alumni have been selected to participate in the American Library Association's 2014 class of Emerging Leaders. Joy McGehee (MS '09), Ashley Rayner (MS '11), Ben Rodriguez (MS '13), Soraya Silverman-Montano (MS '11) and Samuel Suber (MS '12) are included in the year's class of 56 individuals from across the country. Now in its eighth year, this leadership development initiative provides opportunities for newer library professionals to participate in problem-solving work groups, network with peers, observe ALA structure, and serve the profession in a leadership capacity.

Alternative Spring Break (March 24-28)

More than 70 students have applied for Alternative Spring Break (ASB) this March, seeking placements in academic, public, and special libraries in corporations, museums, and archives. Donations of $300 provide support for one student, but gifts of any amount are welcome. Contributions can be made to the Smith Travel Fund (Associate Dean Linda Smith matches all gifts) or the GSLIS Annual Fund.

Capshaw to deliver 2024 Gryphon Lecture

Campus-community partnership launches new maker-in-residence program

A new program co-led by the Champaign-Urbana Community (CUC) Fab Lab aims to bridge and enhance the creative capabilities of local maker communities. The Champaign County Community (CCC) Maker-in-Residence Program was recently awarded a $29,293 grant through the Campus-Community Compact to Accelerate Social Justice initiative in the Office of Public Engagement.

Kato joins recruitment and admission team

Todd Kato joined the iSchool on January 29 as a senior admissions and records manager. In this position, he will develop and implement innovative programs and processes for admission and records management across all the School's degree programs.

Cross joins the Research Services team

Julia Cross joined the iSchool in January as a research development coordinator. In her position, she supports faculty during different stages of the research process, helps identify funding sources and pair researchers with specific solicitations, monitors compliance with different research protocols, and provides support to programs such as Scholars in Residence, research fellowships, and the student research experience.
