Karen Ruhleder currently works at the Graduate College as the Assistant Director of External Fellowships. She received her Ph.D. in Information and Computer Science from UC Irvine in 1991 and served on the faculty of the iSchool 1995-2003. Karen’s research analyzed the transformation of knowledge work and the emergence of virtual teams and online communities. Her landmark paper with Prof. Susan Leigh Star on the Ecology of Infrastructure still informs research on socio-technical systems today. Her work on virtual teams was part of a collaboration with Brigitte Jordan of Xerox’s Palo Alto Research Center. Karen also leads workshops on grantwriting and scientific communication.
