IS 590TC Typography & Communication

This course will explore the importance of typography the physical medium that transmits the message in the history of communication. Students will learn how to identify various typefaces and discover how design, hierarchy, and emphasis can impact communication. Students will not only learn the history of typography, but also develop skill in composing a page of text and understanding the classical principles of layout. This course will begin with a typographic foundation based on type classifications, terminology, and a brief history of writing and printing technology. Students will work through a series of exercises with digital software and various texts in order to provide hands-on experience with typography and to understand its central, yet subtle role in shaping all written communication.
