Advising

Welcome to the iSchool!

Our advising staff is here to support you! We work to ensure all students have a clear and simple path to receive the advising they need throughout their entire course of study

At the iSchool, you are given the unique opportunity to customize your program according to your own academic and professional goals and interests. With only two mandatory classes needed for the MS/LIS degree (LIS 501 and LIS 502), and a total of 40 hours required to complete the degree, you have the flexibility to personalize your program in a variety of ways—by taking interesting elective courses, specializing in an LIS focus area, or participating in invaluable practical experiences available through the Practicum course or other internship and job shadowing opportunities.

Upon entering the program and before enrolling in courses, you are required to talk to the advising staff. Your advisor can help you develop a program that best meets your professional and academic aspirations. Throughout your time in the program, you are encouraged to remain in close contact with your advisor to continue discussing course options, opportunities for practical experiences, and/or faculty areas of research. Consultations with advising staff can take place in person, over the phone, online (i.e., Skype), or via email. Students whose last name begins with letters A-La are assigned Karla Lucht and Le-Z are assigned Colin Van Orman. To reach an advisor e-mail ischool-advising [at] illinois.edu.
