On-Campus Orientation Week

iSchool Orientation Week Schedule – August 12-22

We have developed a series of events during the week prior to the start of class to provide you several opportunities to meet your fellow new students early and get introduced to important places and people at the iSchool and around town.

  • All iSchool students are welcome to attend the following activities, but the workshops are geared toward incoming on-campus MS/LIS and MS/IM students.
  • All events are held in the Information Sciences building, room 126, located at 501 E. Daniel Street, Champaign, IL 61820, unless otherwise noted.

Friday 8/12

7:00 p.m. – Social sponsored by SLA (Special Libraries Association) at Pizza M, 208 W Main St, Urbana, IL 61801.

Monday 8/15

9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. – room 126 – Welcome Breakfast

Join your fellow new students and Student Affairs staff for bagels, fruit, coffee, and tea.

10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. – room 126 – Intro to Advising and Career Services

Learn about iSchool Student Affairs: Advising & Career Services: Who we are and how we can help you succeed in your program.

Tuesday 8/16

11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. – room 126 – International Students: Ask Questions, Get Answers!

International students will have the opportunity to ask questions about programs and anything else on their minds.

12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. – room 126 – International Student Lunch

Join faculty and staff for a lunch provided by iSchool Student Affairs – all students are welcome.

2:00 p.m. – Tour Research Park, 60 Hazelwood Dr, Champaign, IL 61820

Meet at Enterprise Works. Meet site directors and visit various locations that work with data and will be seeking interns.

Wednesday 8/17

12:00 p.m - 1:00 p.m. – room 126 – Kick Start Your Career!

Presenters will highlight ways to become an engaged student right from the start of the program and provide insight into important factors to consider when building a successful career.

3:00 p.m. – Tour the Urbana Free Library, 210 W Green St, Urbana, IL 61801

Staff from TUFL will give iSchool students a tour of the library.

7:00 p.m. – Social Sponsored by SAA (Society of American Archivists) at Jarling's Custard Cup - 309 W Kirby Ave, Champaign, IL 61820. If you need a ride gather in the East Foyer at the iSchool at 6:40 p.m. for a ride. If you can give rides or have questions please contact Ruth Slagle.

Thursday 8/18

12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. – room 126 – Academic Success (Advising FAQs)

Please join graduate studies advisor Karla Lucht as she discusses some of the most frequently asked questions about the program.

2:00 p.m. – Tour the Champaign Public Library, 200 W Green St, Champaign, IL

Staff from CPL will give iSchool students a tour of the library.

6:00 p.m. – Dinner with student groups Stitch & Bitch and Gamers, Information Sciences building room 131

Friday 8/19

8:00-10:00 a.m. Check in at the East Foyer

  • Tech staff will be available to help set-up printing on laptops (room 228). Tech staff will answer any other tech-related questions and other questions regarding restaurants, classes, etc.
  • Pick up I-Cards at Illini Union Bookstore (809 S. Wright St.) - opens at 9:00 a.m.
  • 8:45 - 9:30 a.m. Optional: Building Tours, meet outside of room 109. Building tours leave every 15 minutes (8:45, 9:00, 9:15, 9:30)
  • 8:45 a.m. Optional: Financial Aid Session in room 126

10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Orientation, room 126 (Mandatory!)

12:00-2:00 p.m. Pizza lunch, information fair, student networking, East Foyer and room 131, 2nd floor lounge

2:00 p.m. PhD Students: PhD Orientation, room 242

2:00 p.m. MS/IM Students: MS/IM Orientation, room 126

2:00 p.m. Advising/Registration Drop-in, room 341

3:15 p.m. Optional: Campus walking tour. Meet Jill Gengler by room 126.

7:00 p.m. Optional: Social gathering at Esquire (contact Alex Kinnaman)

Saturday 8/20

9:00 a.m. – iSchool Meet up at the Urbana Farmer's Market sponsored by SAB (Student Advisory Board)

Meet at the City of Urbana entrance tent. The Urbana Farmer's Market is held every Saturday, May-Nov, from 7:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. at the corner of Illinois & Vine Streets in Urbana.

Sunday 8/21

12:00 p.m. – Quad Day Outing sponsored by PLG (Progressive Librarians Guild) and QLA (Queer Library Alliance)

Meet at the Information Sciences building at 11:45 a.m. in the East Foyer to walk over to the Quad as a group.
