GSLIS & APCC: Research opportunities at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center
GSLIS & APCC: Opportunities at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center: Harold Trammel & Megan Thompson to discuss research project opportunities
Harold Trammel, data scientist and doctor of pharmacy, and Megan Thompson, senior manager of business development, from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Midwest Office in Urbana will be at GSLIS to discuss potential ongoing opportunities and research projects for students focusing in data analytics. The ASPCA Midwest Office houses the Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), a 24/7 emergency call center dedicated to providing toxicology information to the veterinary and pet owning communities, when it is needed most.
The APCC wants to enhance data mining from their database, Antox, and explore machine learning to surface new animal risks from substances, and to optimize case management resources. The interested individual(s) would work with the ASPCA Data Services team and APCC business and toxicology staff to mine the APCC's vast data systems to develop ways to help more animals at risk of poisoning. This can include:
- Analysis of veterinary medical records and reports for trends in animal poisoning.
- Development of processes and algorithms for comparing the complexity of poisoning cases, to provide staff with additional tools to increase efficiencies and enhance case management.
Lunch will be provided by the ASPCA Midwest Office. Please RSVP to Dominique Jones if you plan to attend.
