Cooper to speak on visualization at Broadening Participation workshop

Krystal Cooper

Master’s student Krystal Cooper will share the stage next week with researchers and industry professionals at the Broadening Participation in Visualization Workshop (BPViz). She will participate in a panel discussion on “The Many Paths to Visualization.”

BPViz is sponsored by Computing Research Association–Women, Coalition to Diversity Computing, and National Science Foundation. The 2016 workshop will be held August 3-4 at Purdue Polytechnic and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

This theme is, "Bridging Science, Technology and the Arts through Visualization":

The need for persons knowledgeable of the visualization process is becoming more crucial as data continues to grow in volume, variety, and velocity. Visualization is the process of transforming often complex data into visual representations of the data for the purpose of gaining more insight and understanding. The goal of the workshop is to cross boundaries between STEM and non-STEM domains of scientists with data visualization needs, to facilitate collaborations, and [to] broaden participation in visualization on all levels: academic, research, and industry.

Cooper has interests in digital humanities, analytics, and archiving, and is a graduate assistant with the Center for Informatics Research in Science and Scholarship (CIRSS). She participates in the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) Scholars program and Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory (HASTAC) Scholars program.
