1. GSLIS SPOTLIGHT

Applications Due November 15 for New Spring LEEP Enrollment

GSLIS is opening a spring admissions cycle for our popular LEEP distance learning option. The new MS cohort will begin in January. Priority application deadline is November 15, 2012. Dates for the on-campus orientation are tentatively set for January 3-9, 2013.

Since its beginning in 1996, LEEP has been an innovative hybrid program that combines web-based education with brief periods of on-campus instruction. GSLIS remains committed to offering a robust educational experience where students feel connected to one another as well as to our outstanding faculty via varied synchronous and asynchronous activities. Sixteen years and over 1,000 graduates later, LEEP continues to stand out among its peers, offering access to one of the top-ranked LIS programs in the nation.

For more information or to apply, visit our LEEP/Online Education web page.

GSLIS offers new Certificate in Youth Services

GSLIS is enhancing its top-ranked program in youth services librarianship with a new certificate that will better prepare students for their careers. The Certificate in Youth Services is designed to fully meet the educational needs of GSLIS students who are interested in working with young people in a public library setting. The certificate also will provide a competitive edge to graduates seeking professional positions in public library youth services librarianship. For more information, including curriculum, admission requirements, and how to apply, visit our Certificate in Youth Services web page.

2. GSLIS NEWS SUMMARY

News stories recently featured on the GSLIS home page include:

Alumnus Quoted in Nature

Anatoily Gruzd (PhD ’09), director of the social-media lab at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, was quoted this summer in Nature, one of the most prestigious science journals in the world. The article, "Facebook 'likes' the scientific method," addresses plans by the social media giant to make available its aggregated data sets and research methods underlying reports about Facebook users.

GSLIS and US Ignite

We encourage alumni to learn more about how GSLIS and Illinois are involved in the US Ignite project. With support from IMLS, Associate Professor Jon Gant will hold a series of forums over the next year that will inform librarians and inspire them to develop new applications that make use of ultra-high speed broadband connections. The first forum will be held in October at the Library and Information Technology Association Conference in Columbus, Ohio. Subsequent forums will be held at the California Library Association meeting in November; the Schools, Health & Libraries Broadband Coalition gathering in March 2013; and the 2013 ALA Conference in Chicago.

2013 Alternative Spring Break

GSLIS Career Services/Practicum Coordinator Roy Brooks is hard at work planning for a record number of 2013 Alternative Spring Break (ASB) applicants. During our 2012 ASB, 75 students participated in locations around the country. If you are interested in hosting a student, please contact Roy. To see where students were hosted last year, visit the 2012 ASB Map.

Thanks to assistance from Beta Phi Mu Alpha Chapter, the LIS Annual Fund, LSAA, and the Harold Ladd Smith, Jr. and Flora Lancaster Smith Endowment, students have received more than $10,000 in travel support. We need your help to ensure that our students continue to experience this valuable career development opportunity. Gifts made to the Harold Ladd Smith, Jr. and Flora Lancaster Smith Endowment fund are matched, doubling your gift. Please make a gift to the Smith Endowment today to support ASB 2013.

Invest in GSLIS at Illinois

Alumni invest in GSLIS annually by making gifts to benefit students, faculty, and programs, but what is the return on investment? Ask students who benefit from financial assistance for ASB, awards, tuition, books, career development, travel, and alumni engagement opportunities. Donor support provides access to students in need of financial assistance and maintains the excellence of GSLIS’s top ranked programs (both on campus and through LEEP). Graduates become leaders in the field who benefit their communities, the nation, and the world. We urge alumni to renew their annual support today.

LEEP Cohort Challenge Update

With LEEP enrollment climbing (364 MS and 19 CAS students), the LEEP Cohort Challenge takes the spotlight this fall. To date, $17,570 has been raised, representing the collective efforts of GSLIS alumni and cohort leaders to reach the $25,000 goal set in 2009.
