Symposium on Artificial Intelligence and Social Responsibility
What are the roles of the university in addressing issues of social responsibility in the development and operation of technologies powered by artificial intelligence?
In this symposium, four eminent speakers from industry and academia will address these roles and will engage in conversations with the audience and with faculty experts from departments across the campus, including iSchool faculty members Jingrui He, Anita Chan, Nigel Bosch, Yang Wang, and Madelyn Sanfilippo. This event will be held at the Coordinated Science Lab on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus, as well as virtually.
Speakers hail from MIT, IBM Research, Microsoft Research, and Brown University as well as UIUC. They will tackle such topics as:
- What research opportunities are well suited for university efforts and university-industry research collaborations?
- How can universities collaborate with external organizations and local communities to address questions of bias and discrimination in AI-enabled technologies?
- How can universities effectively educate technical professionals and the public to consider social responsibilities in the design of systems that use AI?
- How can universities contribute to the governance of AI-enabled technologies?
