Yiren Liu’s Preliminary Exam

Informatics PhD candidate Yiren Liu will present his dissertation proposal, "Advancing HCI Research through Human-AI Co-Creation: Exploring Designs for Research Ideation with LLMs." Liu's preliminary examination committee includes Associate Professor Yun Huang, Professor Yang Wang, Professor Zhengyu (Mike) Yao, Clinical Associate Professor Vishal Sachdev, and Research Scientist (Allen AI) Pao Siangliulue.

Abstract

With the recent advances in AI research such as Large Language Models (LLMs) and LLM agents, studieshave begun to explore the use of AI for discovering novel research ideas. As many studies focus on usingLLM agents to automate research ideas and hypotheses discovery, few have sought to understand how suchsystems can incorporate human-in-the-loop design to effectively engage researchers especially in the context ofinterdisciplinary research. Moreover, little is known about how such systems might benefit novice researchersby supporting the development of their research methods and mindsets when exploring unfamiliar domains. To bridge the gap, this thesis investigates human-AI co-creation designs that leverage LLMs to enhanceresearch ideation within HCI by building on two completed and one ongoing study.
