Everyone is Welcome: How Libraries can make Safer Spaces for LGBTQ+ Youth
Libraries are in a unique position to act as a safe haven for LGBTQ+ youth. They are quiet, clean, supervised by a responsible adult, and are one of the few places where it is acceptable to be alone and quiet without question. The perfect place for somebody who is still learning their identity and place in this world.
In this workshop, MLIS student and working library paraprofessional Alexander Grigg will examine how libraries can intentionally create safer and more inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ youth through expansion of collections, thoughtful programming, body language, and training for potential challenges and opposition from organizations. Participants will also explore practical strategies for responding to challenges to LGBTQ+ themed programs and collections while upholding intellectual freedom and educating about censorship. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding on why it is important to support this mission in making all libraries safer and more inclusive for these youth.
Anyone can attend!
This is a student semester project that Alexander Grigg is presenting to the iSchool community from an independent study with Dr. Elizabeth Hoiem.
