Jim Hahn's Dissertation Defense

Jim Hahn

PhD candidate Jim Hahn will present his dissertation titled, "Algorithmic BIBFRAME and Social Signaling." His final examination committee includes Professor Bertram Ludäscher, (Chair and Director of Research) Professor Allen Renear, Associate Professor Jessie Chin, Professor Karrie Karahalios, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Abstract

The BIBFRAME ontology is a metadata standard of classes and properties for describing library collections. Unlike its predecessor MARC, BIBFRAME is published in the Web Ontology Language (OWL) and uses the Resource Description Framework (RDF) and RDF Schema (RDFS), fundamental components of linked data. The transition from MARC to BIBFRAME is a challenge because it requires professionals to use aspects of linked data that are not yet common in library practice. This dissertation describes the design and testing of the BF Vibe system, intended to support semi-automated BIBFRAME metadata creation guided by Library of Congress guidelines and examples. Social signaling theory provides the framework for the human-centered design of the system.
