September issue of The Bulletin features 80 books slated for fall release

Cover of The Bulletin depicts a portion of the book cover of The Witch in the Tower. A small child witch wearing all black with a pointed witch hat dances around a cauldron. The cauldron sits over an open flame with a frog eye peeping out from the opening.

The iSchool at Illinois is pleased to announce the publication of The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books 79 (1)This issue features 80 original book reviews of new children’s books that will appear in publishers' fall catalogs.

Fall is a popular season for book releases, and the September issue is one of The Bulletin's signature issues. The team of reviewers spent the summer reading advanced copies to provide insightful reviews that schools and public libraries will use to inform their purchasing and collection development.

"I assign books to reviewers from the titles that are submitted to The Bulletin throughout the year. We receive a lot of fall submissions, and getting to look at and assign so many books feels a bit like Christmas for a book nerd," said Kate Quealy-Gainer, editor in chief of The Bulletin

The Bulletin's featured Big Picture book is Júlia Sardà’s The Witch in the Tower, "a fever dream of a picture book that is partly Sendak’s Wild Rumpus and partly an ode to individuality and embracing one’s weirdness," said Quealy-Gainer.

The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books is one of the nation's leading children's book review journals for school and public librarians, teachers, and others interested in children's literature.

The Bulletin is published eleven times per year (monthly except for August) for the iSchool by The Johns Hopkins University Press. The journal reviews nearly one thousand new books annually for young people from birth to young adulthood, with each review offering an in-depth look at the book's content, reading level, strengths and weaknesses, and possible uses.
