The Fabrication, Materials, Design, Cultural Context, Uses, and Miracle of Paper

Sidney E. Berger, director emeritus of the Phillips Library at the Peabody Essex Museum of Salem and an adjunct professor in the School of Information Sciences, will give the talk "The Fabrication, Materials, Design, Cultural Context, Uses, and Miracle of Paper." He will provide an examination on many of the most extraordinary forms of paper decoration, with a look at many of its uses.

Sidney Berger

Professor Berger teaches courses on rare books and special collections for both the University of Illinois and Simmons College. He has also held positions as Curator of Printed Books and then Curator of Manuscripts at the American Antiquarian Society and headed the Special Collections Department at the University of California at Riverside. He is the author of Rare Books and Special Collections (ALA Neal-Schuman 2014), winner of the 2015 ABC-Clio/American Library Association Award for Best Book in Library Literature, and of The Dictionary of the Book: A Glossary for Book Collectors, Booksellers, Librarians, and Others (Rowman & Littlefield, 2016). The Dictionary includes appendixes discussing paper and paper-related terminology, typeface terminology, paper sizes, binding terminology, and book collectors' clubs and societies.
