The School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is pleased to announce the publication of Research on Diversity in Youth Literature (RDYL) 6 (2).
This issue comprises three original articles and five book reviews centered around the theme of diversity and inclusion in youth literature.
RDYL is co-edited by Sonia Alejandra Rodríguez of LaGuardia Community College and Associate Professor Sarah Park Dahlen, with book reviews co-edited by Cristina Rhodes of Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania and Nithya Sivashankar of Texas State University. This issue's cover art, entitled "In Moonlight," was created by Magdalena Mora.
"Issue 6 (2) is a timely commitment to diversity in youth literature," said Rodríguez and Dahlen. "The authors and book reviewers present thoughtful arguments and thorough examinations that RDYL readers will find useful for their own work. We're excited to share innovative scholarship that promotes RDYL's mission."
The articles cover topics like peritext for young readers, depictions of Islam in children's books, and adolescent stereotypes. Authors in this issue include Scott Beck, Julie Bell, Yasar Bodur, Melissa Cast-Brede, Rebekah Degener, Sarah E. Jackson, and Youssef Salhi.
Book reviews are provided by Kyle L. Chong, Latrice M. Ferguson, Edcel J. Citron-Gonzalez, Emma X. Paulson, and Karen Sands-O'Connor.
The mission of RDYL is to publish scholarship attending to issues of diversity, equity, social justice, inclusion, and intersectionality in youth literature, culture, and media. Published twice yearly, RDYL is a peer-reviewed, online, and open-access journal. It is hosted by the iSchool's Center for Children's Books.
