iSchool represented at the 2025 ALA Annual

Join the iSchool at the American Library Association (ALA) 2025 Annual Conference and Exhibition on June 26–30 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

On June 27, Interim Dean Emily Knox will present the 2024 Downs Intellectual Freedom Award at the Intellectual Freedom Awards reception, which is organized by the Intellectual Freedom Round Table (IFRT), Freedom to Read Foundation (FTRF), and iSchool at Illinois.

During the conference, visit the School at Booth #2442 in the Exhibit Hall. Library Trends will be doing a booth takeover on June 28 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Eastern Time (ET). 

iSchool participation at the ALA Annual Conference includes (all times in ET):

Associate Professor Colin Rhinesmith will participate in the panel discussion, “New Research: Libraries Are Core to ‘Human Infrastructure of Broadband’” on June 27 at 2:30 p.m.

Interim Dean Emily Knox will participate in the panel discussion, “ALA at 150: Envisioning the Next 50 Years — How Will ALA Empower Libraries and Library Workers in 2076,” on June 28 at 4:00 p.m.

PhD student Jim Hahn will present “BIBFRAME in Production: Practical Insights and Case Studies from UC Davis and Penn Libraries,” on June 29 at 9:00 a.m.

Suzan Alteri, assistant director of the Center for Children’s Books, served on the 2025 Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Excellence in Nonfiction Committee. She will be attending the YALSA Awards Celebration on June 29, at 10:30 a.m.

Affiliate Professor Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe will participate in the panel discussions, “LearnRT Behind the Bookshelves: Building a Career in Staff Training and Professional Development,” on June 28 at 10:30 a.m. and “NISO Standards Update” on June 29 at 1:00 p.m.

On June 29, Affiliate Professor Clara Chu will moderate the panel discussion, “Librarians Connecting Globally: Insights and Conversations from the Americas and Beyond,” at 8:30 a.m.; participate in the panel discussion, “Stronger Together Through Connections Worldwide: International Collaborations in Library Services,” at 11:00 a.m.; and co-present the poster, “International Partnerships and Collaborations: The Mortenson Center for International Library Programs Approach,” at 3:30 p.m.

Hassan and Bashir receive distinguished paper award

A paper co-authored by PhD student Muhammad Hassan and Associate Professor Masooda Bashir received the Distinguished Paper Award at the Workshop on Security and Privacy in Standardized IoT, which was held last month in San Diego, California, in conjunction with the Network and Distributed System Security (NDSS) Symposium 2026. 

iSchool researchers to present work at Technocracy Conference

This week, iSchool PhD students and faculty will present their research at the Technocracy Conference. Hosted by the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory at the University of Illinois on March 5–6, the conference will begin with a panel of graduate student papers and continue the following day with invited speakers and a keynote. All events will take place at the Levis Faculty Center on the Urbana campus. 

Fab Lab summer camps foster creativity and hands-on learning

With topics like printmaking, weaving, and Minecraft 3D, it isn't surprising that summer camps offered by the Champaign-Urbana (CU) Community Fab Lab fill up so quickly. Throughout seven weeks this summer, the Fab Lab, a makerspace that supports campus and public community members, will hold 26 week-long camps for youth aged 10 to 15. This summer marks the tenth anniversary of the Fab Lab summer camps.

New multi-institutional project to use AI to represent past historical periods

A new project led by a team of researchers from four universities aims to create and evaluate language models that represent past historical periods. The project, "Artificial Intelligence for Cultural and Historical Reasoning," was recently selected for a 2025 Humanities and AI Virtual Institute (HAVI) award from Schmidt Sciences. The $800,000 grant will be split among four institutions: Cornell University, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, The University of British Columbia, and McGill University. Professor Ted Underwood will serve as the principal investigator for the portion of the project at Illinois.

Wang group to present at WSDM26

Professor and Associate Dean for Research Dong Wang and PhD student Ruohan Zong will present their research at the 19th ACM International Conference on Web Search and Data Mining (WSDM 26), which will be held from February 22–26 in Boise, Idaho. WSDM is a premier international conference in web search, data mining, and AI, known for its highly selective acceptance rates. This year, the acceptance rate for the main track of the conference was only 16 percent.
