School welcomes specialized faculty

The iSchool is pleased to announce the appointment of two specialized faculty members. Yildiz Esener and Nitin Verma will join the School as teaching assistant professors in August 2025.

Yildiz Esener

Esener holds a PhD in information science from the University of North Texas. Her multidisciplinary academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in counseling psychology and a master’s degree in educational psychology. Esener’s research centers on advanced data analytics techniques such as social media analysis, text mining, topic modeling, and sentiment analysis, with a particular focus on understanding online behaviors and digital mental health—especially among marginalized populations. In addition to her research, Esener brings substantial teaching experience in both face-to-face and online formats. She has taught a wide range of courses, including Introduction to Python Programming, Health Data Analytics, and Fundamentals of Data Science.

Nitin Verma

Verma earned his MS and PhD in information science from the University of Texas at Austin, where his research was focused on studying trust, misinformation, AI ethics, and human values. He most recently served as a postdoctoral research scholar at Arizona State University’s School for the Future of Innovation in Society (SFIS) and the New York Academy of Sciences, working in the area of AI and Society. Verma has taught undergraduates and graduates at both UT-Austin and ASU. In addition, he has nearly a decade of industry experience as a software engineer and programmer.

The following iSchool faculty and students will participate in iConference 2026, which will be held virtually from March 23–26 and physically from March 29–April 2 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Professor Anita Say Chan's book Predatory Data: Eugenics in Big Tech and Our Fight for an Independent Future (University of California Press, 2025) has been named a finalist in the Computing and Information Sciences Category of the 2026 PROSE Awards. The annual awards bestowed by the Association of American Publishers recognize the very best in professional and scholarly publishing and celebrate works that have made significant advancements in their respective fields of study.

He inducted into Sigma Xi

Professor Jingrui He has been inducted into Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society. Sigma Xi is the international honor society of science and engineering and one of the oldest and largest scientific organizations in the world, boasting a history of service to science and society spanning over 125 years. It has a multidisciplinary membership of scientists, engineers, and scholars, and Sigma Xi chapters can be found in universities and colleges, government laboratories, and commercial research centers.

Jingrui He

Hassan and Bashir receive distinguished paper award

A paper co-authored by PhD student Muhammad Hassan and Associate Professor Masooda Bashir received the Distinguished Paper Award at the Workshop on Security and Privacy in Standardized IoT, which was held last month in San Diego, California, in conjunction with the Network and Distributed System Security (NDSS) Symposium 2026. 

iSchool researchers to present work at Technocracy Conference

This week, iSchool PhD students and faculty will present their research at the Technocracy Conference. Hosted by the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory at the University of Illinois on March 5–6, the conference will begin with a panel of graduate student papers and continue the following day with invited speakers and a keynote. All events will take place at the Levis Faculty Center on the Urbana campus.
