iSchool participation in iConference 2026

The following iSchool faculty and students will participate in iConference 2026, which will be held virtually from March 23–26 and physically from March 29–April 2 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The theme of this year's conference is "Information Literacies, Authenticity and Use: The Move Towards a Digitally Enlightened Society."

Monday, March 23

Professor Jiangping Chen and PhD student Milo Ono will present "The Role of Misinformation in Elder Fraud: A Conceptual Framework."

Teaching Assistant Professor David Charles will serve as a moderator for session, “Algorithm, Competencies, and Trust.”

Tuesday, March 24

Professor Kate McDowell will serve as a moderator for the session, "Qualitative Research: Patterns and Participants."

Wednesday, March 25

PhD students Melissa Wilfley and Mengting Ai and Assistant Professor Madelyn Rose Sanfilippo will present "Competing Visions of Ethical AI: A Case Study of OpenAI."

Glen Layne-Worthey, associate director for research support services at the Hathitrust Research Center; Professor J. Stephen Downie; Ryan Dubnicek, digital humanities specialist; and Deren Kudeki, visiting research programmer, will present "Illuminating the large-scale digital library with TORCHLITE from the HathiTrust Research Center."

Undergraduate Research Symposium features iSchool researchers

The iSchool is well represented in the 19th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, which will be held on April 30 from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. in the Illini Union. The iSchool is a Gold Sponsor of the symposium, which spotlights undergraduate research through oral and poster presentations, creative performances, and art exhibits.

Vaez Afshar selected as 2026 APT Student Scholar

The Association for Preservation Technology (APT) International has named Informatics PhD student Sepehr Vaez Afshar as a 2026 Student Scholar. Established in 1985, the APT Student Scholarship annually recognizes ten students worldwide whose work advances preservation technology through innovative and impactful approaches.
