Democratizing Information and Establishing Transparency Using Human-Centered Design

Human-centered design (HCD) is a newer problem-solving methodology that has garnered much attention in industry and academia in recent years. However, this popularity has triggered a multitude of variants on the approach, resulting in a nebulous definition, and necessitating an HCD framework that defines the approach for academic contexts and is grounded in research and assessment. Siebel Center for Design will introduce its research-based human-centered design taxonomy, and will also showcase the use of its HCD framework to address information-related issues via past and current projects, including understanding barriers to the adoption of UIUC’s Safer Illinois App and democratizing the molecule-making experience for the Molecule Maker Lab. The powerful insights gained through this research demonstrate that human-centered design and multidisciplinary collaboration can transform entire university communities, at every level. At the end of this presentation, we will share ways students, faculty, and staff can further engage with Siebel Center for Design.
