Presentation Title: Research Data Management: The Case of Aerospace, Industrial and Mechanical Science Engineering Faculty

Presenter: Chris Wiley, doctoral student

Abstract: This article analyzes fourteen in-depth interviews of Aerospace, Industrial and Mechanical Science Engineering faculty at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign to determine faculty data management practices and needs within the context of their research activities. The interviews focused on current research projects, data management planning, data sharing, data reuse, and struggles or challenges managing research data. In general, the interviews corroborated the trends identified in the literature. Data generation, usage, storage, and sharing are an integrated aspect of a larger scholarly workflow and are not necessarily treated as a separate entity. Overall, the goal of this study is to gain a better understanding of these researcher’s data management practices and enhance the research data services provided to faculty and research groups.
