Hong Shen, assistant research professor at Carnegie Mellon University, will present "A Critical Approach to AI: When Machines Fail, We Rise."

Hong Shen serves as an assistant research professor in the Human Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).She received her PhD in communications from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her research focuses on the social and policy dimensions of digital platforms and algorithmic systems, with a strong emphasis on bias, fairness, social justice and power relations in Artificial Intelligence. Her work has been funded through grants from the National Science Foundation, Amazon, Cisco, Block Center for Technology and Society, and more. She is the recipient of a Google Policy Fellowship.
