Colloquium: David Nichols
David Nichols, iSchool research fellow and professor of computer science at the University of Waikato, New Zealand, will present "Financial scams on the web: Exploring the investor alerting publishing practices of financial regulators."
Abstract: Many financial scams originate through websites and emails before moving to the banking system. Financial regulators around the world investigate alleged scams and provide alerting services to prevent consumers from losing money. In this talk, I examine how various regulators publish this alerting information. In particular, I will discuss how the alerts may be better designed and more effectively integrated into existing web browsing contexts to reduce the incidence of these scams.
Nichols' research interests include digital libraries, usability and information science. He coauthored How to Build a Digital Library (2nd Edition) and is a member of the Greenstone Digital Library research group at Waikato.
