IS 400 Colloquium: Julie Zook

Julie Zook, associate professor in the School of Architecture in the College of Fine & Applied Arts, will present "Data & Design in Hospital Architecture."

Abstract

This talk describes how data-based approaches can illuminate subtle-but-crucial functions of hospital architecture. Zook will talk first about how theories of architectural function, specifically for inpatient units, were built using data about hospital spatial properties and hospital process and outcome variables. She will then describe a full cycle, where research and analysis informed hospital design decisions, then, after the building was constructed and occupied, what we found when we gathered data to test if our research-based decisions worked as expected.

Bio

Julie Zook is an associate professor at the University of Illinois School of Architecture, where she teaches and coordinates graduate study in health and well-being. She presents nationally and internationally on medicine, healthcare, and architecture and consults with Architecture Engineering & Construction firms on research-informed design decisions. Among other peer-reviewed publications, she is co-editor of the open-access book, “The Covert Life of Hospital Architecture” (UCL Press), which uses an evidence-based approach to understanding how to design hospitals for patient safety, care team collaboration, and wayfinding. She earned her PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a focus on sociospatial analysis.
