Kremer highlighted in SLA 'Illuminate Illinois' feature

[image1-right]Cynthia Kremer (MS '11) is the focus of a recent Illuminate Illinois feature by the Special Libraries Association (SLA) Illinois Chapter. Kremer is a part-time reference librarian at National Louis University (NLU) and is currently working on a practicum in health sciences librarianship at Rush Medical Center and the University of Illinois at Chicago's Library of the Health Sciences. She will soon move into a full-time instructor position at NLU.

In the interview with SLA, Kremer discussed how her background in science business and LIS led to where she is today:

What advanced degree/s do you have?
My bachelor’s degree is in science business which includes a major in environmental science with a minor in business. My master’s is in library and information science from the University of Illinois GSLIS.

Any comments on how that fits with your work or goals today?
Both degrees are very useful in my work. The science background helped me secure two internships in science library settings. My library degree gave me a strong background in reference and instruction which helps me in my role as instructor and reference librarian.

If you met a total (professional) stranger, what’s your elevator pitch? What do you think your clients value most about working with you?
Working with students who come from a diverse background is very rewarding. I really feel good when a student comes to me intimidated by our online resources and leaves the appointment with a better understanding of how to use the databases and more confidence in finding information on their own.
