Cragin (PhD '09) to head Midwest Big Data Hub

Alumna Melissa Cragin (PhD '09) has been named executive director of Midwest Big Data Hub (MBDH). MBDH is a network of regional institutions created to facilitate collection, management, and use of complex information, creating active partnerships of experts and resources to address issues relevant to life in the Midwest. MBDH is based at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where Cragin will work closely with colleagues at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications.
 
Previously, Cragin was a staff associate at the National Science Foundation and research assistant professor at the iSchool from 2009 until 2011, when she received a Science & Technology Policy Fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In addition to her PhD from the iSchool, Cragin earned a MLIS from Rutgers University and M.Ed. from Rhode Island College.

iSchool alumni contribute to digital archives exposing opioid industry

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one million people have died in the past twenty-five years from a drug overdose. More than seventy-five percent of drug overdose deaths in 2021 involved an opioid. As opioid addiction and deaths have mounted over the decades, the business of making and selling prescription painkillers was hidden from the public. Thousands of lawsuits against opioid manufacturers, distributors, and pharmacies have since exposed the industry's deceptive practices.

Get to know Hiromi Morikawa, executive officer and chief information officer

Hiromi Morikawa (CAS '12), executive officer and chief information officer at Nishimoto Co., Ltd., enjoys helping her teams grow and succeed. She was recently named a 2024 Consumer Goods Technology Visionary, which recognizes a select cohort of consumer goods executives who embody positive change in their organizations and inspire through their leadership.

The iSchool Alumni Association (ISAA) is pleased to announce the recipients of its annual awards.

Mullally to deliver iSchool Convocation address

Alumna M. Katherine (Katy) Mullally (MSLIS '04) will deliver the 2024 iSchool Convocation address. The event will be held on Sunday, May 12, at 1:30 p.m. at the Activities and Recreation Center. The ceremony will be broadcast live online so that students, families, and friends can watch if they are unable to attend in person.
