Get to know Paige Schulz, software developer

Paige Schulz with her basset hound

For Paige Schulz (BSIS '22), the best part about working as a software developer for The Aerospace Corporation is "embracing constant change." She enjoys the fast pace in the tech world and in New York City, where she resides.

Where do you work and what is your role?

I work as a software developer for The Aerospace Corporation.

What do you like best about your job?

In the tech world, learning never stops. Each day offers a chance to acquire new skills and stay ahead. Embracing constant change is what makes my job exciting, and learning as much as I can is my main focus in the early years of my career.

Why did you decide to pursue a degree in information sciences?

A degree in information sciences at the U of I was a perfect blend of computer science and information management. The program emphasized differences from the classic computer science degree, as we focused on working with people who use the systems, technology, and tools that we create. My favorite part was that I was able to customize my degree to my interests using the different learning pathways.

How did the iSchool help you get to where you are today?

The iSchool gave me ample opportunities to network. I was fortunate to have two internships (one with the Research Park), which gave me valuable skills to highlight on my resume.

What advice would you like to share with iSchool students?

I would offer a few tidbits of advice. Gain practical experience. Look for internships, part-time jobs, or personal projects that allow you to apply your knowledge and develop hands-on skills. This will make you more attractive to employers and help you hone your troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities. Develop versatile soft skills. Strong communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and customer service skills are just as important as technical expertise.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I enjoy playing with my 11-year-old basset hound Mabel, exploring New York City (where I just moved!), trying workout classes, and playing pickleball.
