Scholarship provides validation, motivation for Martinez

Fabian Martinez graduation

BSIS+DS student Fabian Martinez chose his major because he wanted to learn how to help people understand and interpret data and information. While his immediate plans include finding a job in data analytics, business analytics, consulting, or product management, his ultimate goal is "to create meaningful relationships and help make a meaningful impact in the world" in whatever way he can.

Martinez is receiving support for his education from the iSchool through the G. Edward Evans Minority Student Scholarship.

"As a first-generation student, I have experienced a lot of bumps in the road in my academic career, but I made it to this point, for which I’m truly grateful. This scholarship has helped me set a higher standard for myself and work even harder. I know that the scholarship could have been given to anyone, and I don't take it for granted," he said.

Martinez is happy with his choice of major and the "tight-knit community" in the iSchool. As an undergraduate ambassador for the School, he talks to prospective students about his student experience and answers questions they may have about the iSchool or campus. He is also part of the professional information society Psi Eta Mu, which has provided him with career development and networking opportunities. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with friends, cooking, working out, and running.

He is grateful to G. Edward Evans (PhD '69) for establishing the scholarship and to donors whose generosity helps lighten students' financial load.

"Scholarships like this provide not just financial relief but also a sense of validation and encouragement," he said. "Any support has a lasting impact and the ability to shape the future of students like me. I hope more individuals will continue to invest in the success of aspiring professionals."
