iSchool faculty and staff present at AISLE annual conference

Join the iSchool for the Association of Illinois School Library Educators (AISLE) annual conference, held October 5–7 at the I Hotel and Conference Center in Champaign, Illinois. The theme for the conference is “Libraries Build Connections.”

Carolyn Kinsella (MSLIS '03), Beverly Frett (MSLIS '04), and Adjunct Lecturer Karen Egan will be honored with the 2025 Polestar Award, 2025 Lifetime Membership Honor Award, and the Crystal Honor, respectively, during the AISLE awards banquet. 

The following iSchool faculty and staff will present during the conference:

Adjunct Lecturer Kristen Mattson will lead a preconference session entitled “AI Literacy through the iSAIL Standards” at 2:30 p.m. on October 5. Mattson will also present “Fighting AI ‘Slop’—Teaching about Misinformation in the Age of AI” at 11:15 a.m. on October 6; “Best Resources for Teaching Digital Citizenship” at 2:00 p.m. on October 6; and “Digital Citizenship Through Dystopian Literature” at 9:30 a.m. on October 7. 

On October 6, Professor Kate McDowell opens the conference as the welcome speaker. She will be discussing “Critical Data Storytelling for Libraries” at 8:00 a.m.

Editor for The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books Kate Quealy-Gainer and Assistant Director of the Center for Children’s Books Suzan Alteri will present “Timely, Inspiring, Diverse Reads with the Center for Children’s Books” at 11:15 a.m. on October 6.

PhD student Fobazi Ettarh passes away

PhD student Fobazi Ettarh passed away on January 28, 2026. Ettarh entered the doctoral program at the University of Illinois in 2022. She held an MLIS from Rutgers University and bachelor's degree in English and sociology from the University of Delaware. Prior to joining the iSchool, Ettarh served as an academic librarian at Temple University Libraries; California State University, Dominguez Hills; and Rutgers University. She was also a school library media specialist at Hawthorne (NJ) Public Schools.

Gregory B. Newby passes away

Gregory B. Newby passed away October 21, 2025. Newby was an assistant professor at the iSchool at Illinois from 1991 to 1997 and taught graduate-level courses in information technology; networking tools and use; information organization and system design; and user-based design and analysis. He was the founder of Prairienet and instrumental in the design of the iSchool's Leep program in 1996.

Hooper joins admissions and records team

Kim Hooper has joined the iSchool as an office support specialist. In her position, she will provide administrative support to the admissions and records team.

Haider joins academic affairs

Iftikhar Haider has joined the academic affairs team as assistant director for experiential learning. In his position, he will collaborate directly with faculty, staff, students, and external partners to facilitate successful experiential learning in undergraduate, graduate, and online programs of the iSchool.
