GSLIS hosts Community of Scholars visit

GSLIS will host 14 prospective students on March 15 as part of the campus-wide Community of Scholars (COS) Campus Visit Program. The program brings admitted graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds to campus to meet with their academic programs and give them the opportunity to network with current and prospective students. GSLIS will welcome four doctoral students and ten master’s students, who will visit campus from March 14 - 16.

Amani Ayad, coordinator for the LIS Access Midwest (LAMP) program, is arranging the students’ visit at GSLIS. LAMP is a regional network of LIS schools and academic libraries that work to recruit and provide support for students from statistically and historically underrepresented populations in LIS. “The COS program is a great opportunity for prospective students to visit and spend a day with students, faculty, and staff,” said Ayad. “The visit provides an open forum for conversation and sheds light on research and scholarship at GSLIS. We're delighted to participate for the second year and work collaboratively with the Graduate College on this campus-wide project.”

In addition to their program visits, prospective students will participate in several activities. These include a student panel discussion, a networking social, and three research sessions: Institutionalizing Race; Race, Gender, and Love; and Understanding Networks of Achievement. GSLIS student Tracy Drake will serve on the student panel addressing student life on campus, and GSLIS Professor Abdul Alkalimat will share remarks at the evening banquet on March 15.

For a schedule of activities, please see the COS Schedule of Events.
