1. GSLIS SPOTLIGHT

Cooke, Knox to Join GSLIS Faculty

GSLIS is pleased to announce the addition of two new faculty members: Nicole A. Cooke and Emily Knox will begin as assistant professors in August 2012.

Cooke's research interests include human information behavior in online settings; LIS distance education and instruction; the retention and mentoring of minority librarians and LIS doctoral students; and leadership, organizational development, and communication in libraries. She received her BA in communication and an MLS from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey; an M.Ed from Pennsylvania State University; and has completed her PhD in communication, information, and library studies at Rutgers. She comes to GSLIS from Montclair State University's Sprague Library, where she has worked as an instruction librarian and tenured assistant professor for nine years; she is also an ALA Spectrum Doctoral Fellow and was named a Library Journal Mover & Shaker in 2007.

Knox's research interests include intellectual freedom and censorship, book history and reading practices, and information ethics and policy. She received her BA in religion from Smith College, an MA from the University of Chicago Divinity School, an MS in library and information science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and is completing her PhD in communication, information, and library studies at Rutgers. Emily was the associate director and reference librarian at the St. Mark's (now Keller) Library of the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church in New York City for five years before returning to doctoral studies.

"We are absolutely delighted to welcome these outstanding young scholars as new faculty members at GSLIS," said Allen Renear, interim dean. "Both bring solid, deep, and varied experience in libraries, as well as engaging fundamental research agendas in areas critical to advancing the understanding and shaping of information organizations and practices."

LIS 590CBL Cataloging for School Libraries (2 hours) – Kathryn La Barre

This course will introduce the student to the principles, practices, and standards for information representation and organization in school media centers. Course content will include an introduction to original cataloging of nonstandard materials (such as realia and audiovisual materials), evaluation of bibliographic records, exposure to authority control and subject access systems with a special focus on the Dewey Decimal System, and Sears Subject Headings. The course also will provide an overview and exploration of different library systems/OPACS.

Hello GSLIS family! I hope this announcement finds you well and excited for the GSLIS Summer Social planned to take place in Chicago in June.

After connecting for random parties and lunches, a few of your fellow alumni thought a more regular and larger scale gathering would be a great way to keep ties with our alma mater, reconnect former classmates, meet new friends who preceded and succeeded us, as well as give current students the opportunity to network with alumni. Your hosts as well as GSLIS staff will welcome guests at 2:00 p.m. I hope you will consider joining us!

The GSLIS Summer Social will take place during an eventful weekend in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood. There are free events close to our Quincy Street location that you may want to consider as supplemental activities for an overall great day in the city. First, the Bluesfest will be taking place Friday through Sunday in Grant Park. Second, the Lit Fest will be taking place Saturday through Sunday in Printer’s Row. Both events are within walking distance, and several nearby public transportation buses will drive you directly there!

As for our venue, 565 Quincy is a condominium building with an excellent game room and full-size kitchen. Games and amenities include two bowling lanes, ping-pong, table tennis, a mini-golf course, darts, foosball, and pool tables. Food, refreshments, and apparel for a raffle will be provided courtesy of GSLIS.

Via car: The Kennedy Expressway (Interstate 90 & Interstate 94) is next to a parking lot at 659 W. Randolph Street. This lot costs $6 to park for the day and is within walking distance to 565 Quincy Street.
Via Amtrak or Metra train: Union Station is one street away from 565 Quincy Street.
Via Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) train: The Blue Line is within walking distance from 565 Quincy Street. The Clinton stop is the closest to the event location.

ADVANCEMENT HIGHLIGHTS

LSAA Tassel Project

The Library School Alumni Association (LSAA) began the Tassel Project in 2011 to raise money for the LSAA Endowed Professorship. You may not know that GSLIS currently does not have an endowed professorship, which is critical to recruiting and supporting top-ranked faculty in the field.

Students and alumni are encouraged to make a gift in the amount of their graduation year (e.g., 2012 = $20.12 donation), accompanied by the name of a GSLIS faculty or staff member who inspired, mentored, or guided them during their time in the program. Those faculty/staff honored will receive a notice of your gift honoring them, and a bright yellow graduation tassel will be sent to you in return. Until 2011, GSLIS graduates did not have an identifiable tassel for their graduation caps. A listing of those who contributed to the fund through December 31, 2011, appears in this spring's Alumni Newsletter.

To participate, visit our Opportunities for Giving page and select the "Faculty" tab, choose "LSAA Endowed Professorship," and click the "Make your gift" button. Please be sure to include the name of the person honored in the "Special Instructions" section of the gift form.

LEEP Cohort Challenge Update

More than 80 alumni (both LEEP and on-campus) have contributed to the LEEP Cohort Challenge, raising $16,325 for the scholarship fund to date. Special thanks are extended to all the cohort leaders for their support and leadership. Two cohorts—Cohort 7, led by Brooke Johnson and Cohort 3, led by Marci Cohen—were the first not only to reach, but also to exceed, the original $2,100 cohort goal. Volunteers are still needed for Cohorts 12, 14, and 15. Please contact contact Sharon Johnson to receive further information on how to become involved.
