GSLIS offers Summer Getaway professional development workshops

building-feature-CG-900w.jpgGSLIS will offer a Summer Getaway professional development workshop series for school librarians on June 23-25. Workshops will focus on current topics in the field of school librarianship and will offer opportunities to gain hands-on experience using the newest technologies and to connect with like-minded professionals in the field. Participants can register for one, two, or three days. The cost is $60 per day, with breakfast and lunch included. Each workshop runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at GSLIS, 501 E. Daniel Street, with check-in opening at 8:30 a.m. daily.

Danielson, SLOs and You (K-12)
A panel of practitioners will share their recent experiences with developing a performance evaluation for school librarians. How did they approach the process? What were the results? Did they include Student Learning Objectives? We’ll learn from panelists and then work in groups using examples to develop your own evaluation. Moderated by Georgeann Burch.

Going Digital with eBooks and eReaders (K-12)
Are you interested in recent research on ebooks and ereading? Want to explore criteria for purchasing and sources for free ebooks? Looking for tips on how to build and catalogue a collection? How do you promote ebook use, impact curriculum, and train students and faculty? An overview of these topics will be followed by hands-on breakout sessions. Plan to leave with links to resources, ebooks, and a supportive learning community! Presented by Linda Straube, librarian at New Trier High School, Winnetka. Bring your own device if possible.

Gaga for Google: Apps for K-12
This session will cover the different apps within Google—including Gmail Tips and Tricks, Google Calendar, Google Drive, and scripts that can be used to make your life easier. Explore the different ways to integrate Google with students and staff. Leave with materials that you can take back to your school to start going gaga for Google. Presented by David Ackerman, media specialist K-5, and Krista Schoellhorn, district media specialist, both from Waterloo CUSD #5. Bring your own device if possible.

Invasion of the iPads: Apps for K-8
Hundreds of apps at your fingertips…which ones are best for library instruction? Which are best to recommend to your classroom teachers for curriculum integration? How do you manage iPad use? This session will answer these questions and more, and give you time to explore the apps yourself during the hands-on portion of the session. Presented by Alicia Wiechert, library media specialist at Romona Elementary School, Wilmette, and Josh Wiechert, technology and classroom teacher at Burke Elementary School, Chicago. Bring your own device if possible.

Gregory B. Newby passed away October 21, 2025. Newby was an assistant professor at the iSchool at Illinois from 1991 to 1997 and taught graduate-level courses in information technology; networking tools and use; information organization and system design; and user-based design and analysis. He was the founder of Prairienet and instrumental in the design of the iSchool's Leep program in 1996.

Iftikhar Haider has joined the academic affairs team as assistant director for experiential learning. In his position, he will collaborate directly with faculty, staff, students, and external partners to facilitate successful experiential learning in undergraduate, graduate, and online programs of the iSchool.

Wang appointed associate dean for research

The iSchool is pleased to announce that Professor Dong Wang has been appointed associate dean for research. In this role, Wang will provide leadership in the support, integration, communication, and administration of the iSchool's research and scholarship endeavors. This includes supervising the iSchool's Research Services unit, supporting the research centers, and assisting faculty in the acquisition of research funding.
