Burch, Lucht lead workshop for Global Institute for Secondary Educators

Georgeann Burch, K-12 program coordinator, and Karla Lucht, academic advisor and doctoral student, will lead an upcoming workshop for high school teachers titled, “American Literary Resources for the Classroom.” The workshop, to be held on June 25, is one of several offered as part of the Global Institute for Secondary Educators, a program organized by the Center for Global Studies at the University of Illinois and sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. In the workshop, Burch and Lucht will review online resources appropriate for high school classrooms in the areas of social studies, history, and English, and they will work with attendees to create lesson plan templates.

The Global Institute for Secondary Educators is an intensive six-week program that provides educators from around with world with an interdisciplinary professional development experience. The institute offers informed lectures, pedagogy workshops, panels and discussions with educators, government officials, and community residents, local site visits, study tours to major cities in the U.S., and sustained engagement with the host community.

Burch is the coordinator of K-12 school librarianship and school media specialist programs at GSLIS, including the K-12 LIS Licensure Program and continuing professional development opportunities for school librarians. She advises students who are considering careers in school librarianship and supervises field experiences of these students.

Lucht is a doctoral student and an academic advisor for on-campus students at GSLIS. Her research interests include multicultural representation and social justice advocacy in library collections and services for youth and conflicts of race, ethnicity, and culture in youth literature.

The iSchool recognized faculty and staff for their contributions to teaching and outstanding service to the School at a ceremony on May 6. Interim Dean Emily Knox presented plaques to the inaugural recipients of the Faculty Teaching Award, Adjunct Teaching Award, and Staff Excellence Award.

iSchool to shape development of cultural heritage documentation standards

The School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has formally joined the special interest group (SIG) that leads the development of the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CRM), an ISO standard (21127:2023) for the exchange and integration of wide-ranging scientific and scholarly documentation about the past.

Bailey joins the communications and marketing team

J.B. Bailey joined the iSchool on April 13 as coordinator of events. In this new role, he will be responsible for the development, management, and implementation of iSchool events with a cohesive brand identity. He will also provide support to the communications and marketing team.

Meet the iSchool undergraduate advising team

The iSchool welcomed five staff members to its undergraduate advising team this academic year. Academic Advisors and Coordinators Cory Castaneda, Dara (DL) Lawyer, and Keri Marion joined the School in August, and Katie Murphy joined in February. Stacy Clemmons was promoted to senior advisor and coordinator and transitioned from graduate to undergraduate student advising.
