Last fall the Office of Student Affairs welcomed Delicia Tiera Greene as the School’s new visiting diversity and recruiting specialist. Greene brings to GSLIS years of experience in graduate-level diversity recruiting as well as master’s degrees in secondary education and administration and supervision, master’s and doctoral degrees in LIS, and significant service to the LIS field.
“As visiting diversity and recruiting specialist, Delicia’s role is to sustain and grow our inclusion initiatives and systematic connections with diversity programs, and to recruit students to our graduate programs. We are delighted to have her on our Student Affairs team,” said Kate McDowell, assistant dean for student affairs.
Why did you choose to work at GSLIS?
I have worked in the field of library and information science for over twenty years in various capacities—as a school librarian with The New York City Department of Education, a young adult librarian with The New York Public Library, a community-engaged scholar with a focus on urban librarianship, and in various student affairs roles at Syracuse University. I felt that the diversity and recruiting specialist position at GSLIS was ideal because it drew upon several skill sets that I had attained at various stages in my professional career. I felt that I could bring both my knowledge of the library and information science field and my experience in student affairs roles working with historically underrepresented populations.
Where did you work prior to GSLIS?
Prior to GSLIS, I was a PhD candidate at the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York. Recently, I successfully defended my dissertation titled, “Concrete Roses: A Critical Exploration of Black Adolescent Girls' Literacy and Language Practices in an Out-of-School Online Street Literature Book Club.” Prior to pursuing my PhD, I worked for several years with the New York Public Library as a young adult librarian and with the New York City Department of Education as a school librarian in the South Bronx, New York.
Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in the borough of the Bronx in New York City.
