The American Library Association (ALA) will hold its 2016 Annual Conference and Exhibition in Orlando, Florida, on June 23-28. The theme of the conference is, "Transforming Our Libraries, Ourselves."

Attendees are invited to join iSchool faculty and staff at the following presentations and events:

Assistant Professor Nicole A. Cooke will be honored with the ALA Equality Award at the ALA Awards Presentation and President's Program at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 26.

Cooke will moderate a panel discussion titled, "Fearless Questions and Fierce Conversations: Recruiting and Retaining LIS Doctoral Students of Color," at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, during the event, "Leaders Wanted: Is an LIS Doctoral Program Right for You?" The iSchool will participate in the LIS doctoral options fair following the panel discussion (11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.).

Assistant Professor Emily Knox (MS '03) will present her paper, "'Dirty' Materials Out of Place: Inappropriate Books and Social Classification," at the Library History Research Forum at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 26.

Affiliated faculty member Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe (MS '94) give a presentation as part of the forum discussion, "Lessons from IMLS Funded Communities of Practice," at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 25. She will also participate in the panel discussion, "Improve Services and Create Value: Using Data to Guide Your Library’s Strategic Planning Process," at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 27.

Please note that this is an exhibits only pass; it will not allow access to any of the workshops or conference sessions.

Alumni are invited to attend the LSAA annual meeting and reception on Sunday, June 26, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Orlando. The evening's program will include a special celebration of the twentieth anniversary of our Leep online learning option.

The School will also host a young alumni happy hour on Saturday, June 25, from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Copper Canyon Grill.

Chan to deliver keynote at SIGCIS 2024

Associate Professor Anita Say Chan will deliver the keynote at the 15th annual conference of the SHOT (Society for the History of Technology) Special Interest Group for Computing, Information, and Society (SIGCIS), which will be held on July 14 in Viña del Mar, Chile. SIGCIS is the leading international group for historians with an interest in the history of information technology and its applications. The theme for SIGCIS 2024 is "System Update: Patches, Tactics, Responses."

Gabriel joins academic affairs team

Gillian Gabriel joined the iSchool on June 3 as an office administrator - course scheduler. In this position, she will work with the Academic Affairs team to design the schedule and input it into Banner, work with Catalog Management and Section Scheduling (CMSS) to arrange classroom space, manage the final exam schedule, and coordinate with the bookstore on textbook orders.

Wang group to present at computational linguistics conference

Members of Associate Professor Dong Wang's research group, the Social Sensing and Intelligence Lab, will present their research at the 2024 Annual Conference of the North American Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics (NAACL 2024), which will be held from June 16-21 in Mexico City, Mexico.

Miller joins administrative support team

Alexis Miller joined the iSchool on June 4 as an office manager. In this position, she will provide support to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and assist with various student affairs activities.

CCB collaboration receives award from the Organization of American Historians

A collaborative project of the iSchool's Center for Children's Books (CCB) and the National Park Service (NPS) has been honored by the Organization of American Historians. The Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument, which features the Books to Parks website, received the Stanton-Horton Award, which recognizes "excellence in National Park Service historical efforts that make the NPS a leader in promoting public understanding of and engagement with American history."
