Stodden elected Member-at-Large for AAAS section

Associate Professor Victoria Stodden has been elected Member-at-Large for the Statistics section of The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). AAAS is an international, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing science, engineering, and innovation around the world for the benefit of all people. As a Member-at-Large, Stodden will support the Statistics section's steering group in its responsibilities, which includes nominating and reviewing Fellows as well as proposing and reviewing symposia for the AAAS Annual Meeting. She will serve a four-year term, starting in February.

Stodden's research addresses a wide range of topics, including standards of openness for data and code sharing, legal and policy barriers to disseminating reproducible research, robustness in replicated findings, cyberinfrastructure to enable reproducibility, and scientific publishing practices. She serves as an associate editor for reproducibility for the Journal of the American Statistical Society and is a member of both the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Committee on Reproducibility and Replicability in Science and the NAS Roundtable on Data Science Postsecondary Education.

At Illinois, she holds faculty affiliate appointments in the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), Coordinated Science Lab, College of Law, Department of Statistics, and Department of Computer Science. Stodden earned both her PhD in statistics and her law degree from Stanford University.

Vaez Afshar named APT Student Scholar

Informatics PhD student Sepehr Vaez Afshar has been named a Student Scholar by The Association for Preservation Technology International (APT). Each year, around ten students are selected worldwide for the scholarship program based on the quality and innovation of their research abstracts, as well as their contribution to the field of preservation technology. Scholars are paired with mentors from the APT College of Fellows, prepare and present their research during the association's annual conference, and enjoy opportunities for long-term professional networking and mentorship within the preservation community.

iSchool well represented at ASIS&T 2025

iSchool faculty, staff, and students will participate in the 88th Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T), which will be held on November 14-18 in Arlington, Virginia. ASIS&T will also host a Virtual Satellite Meeting on December 11-12. 

PhD students receive scholarships from IAPP

Information Sciences PhD students Mubarak Raji, Eryclis Rodrigues Silva, and Eryue Xu, and Informatics PhD student Muhammad Hussain have received A. Serwin Conference Scholarships from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). The award, which recognizes outstanding students in the areas of privacy, AI governance, and digital responsibility, consists of $1,000 and complimentary conference registration. The IAPP’s annual conference, Privacy. Security. Risk., will be held October 30-31 in San Diego, California.
