PhD student Puranjani Das has been selected as a recipient of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) SIG CMR Student Membership Award for the 2024-2025 academic year. She will receive a complimentary one-year membership in both ASIS&T and SIG CMR, a special interest group focused on classification and metadata research.

Das aims to provide better solutions to information organization and modeling problems by exploring metadata for various types of information. She is currently working with metadata related to biomedical literature and audiovisual media. In the past, she has worked with population-related metadata on the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I believe that for any information to be used efficiently, it needs to be stored and structured in the most optimal and accurate way," said Das. "I am interested in uncovering the sociotechnical challenges related to various information organization systems and finding ways to improve them."

Das holds a master's degree in library and information science from the Indian Statistical Institute and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computing from the Institute of Mathematics and Application.
