iSchool researchers present at CSCW 2025

Several faculty, students, and recent grads will present their research at the 28th ACM Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing (CSCW 2025), which will be held October 18–22 in Bergen, Norway. The online portion of the conference will be held on October 10. 

CSCW brings together researchers and practitioners to investigate how technology can be designed to support collaborative activities in work and daily life.

Friday, October 10 

PhD student Yeaeun Gong will present the paper co-authored with Professor Dong Wang, and PhD students Lanyu Shang and Yifan Liu, “Designing Effective AI Explanations for Misinformation Detection: A Comparative Study of Content, Social, and Combined Explanations.”

Recent graduate Kyrie Zhixuan Zhou (PhD ’25) will present the paper co-authored with Associate Professor Rachel Adler, “Exploring the Diversity of Music Experiences for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals.”

Zhou will present the paper co-authored with Adler, “Toward Designing Accessible and Meaningful Software for Cancer Survivors.” 

Postdoctoral Research Associate Bogeum Choi co-authored the paper, “Understanding Community ‘Likes’ and Clinical Perspective in Mental Health Discourse: Insights from YouTube Comments on College Students’ Mental Health.” 

Monday, October 20

Affiliate Assistant Professor Koustuv Saha co-authored the paper, “Balancing Caregiving and Self-Care: Exploring Mental Health Needs in Alzheimer’s and Dementia Caregiving.” 

Tuesday, October 21 

Si Chen (PhD ’24) will present the paper co-authored with Associate Professor Yun Huang and PhD student Haocong Cheng, “Customizing Generated Signs and Voices of AI Avatars: Deaf-Centric Mixed-Reality Design for Deaf-Hearing Communication.”

Associate Professor Yun Huang will present the paper co-authored with Informatics PhD student Yiren Liu, “Improving Emotional Support Delivery in Text-Based Community Safety Reporting Using Large Language Models.” 

Affiliate Professor Karrie Karahalios will serve as chair of a town hall. 

Wednesday, October 22 

Chen will present the paper co-authored with Huang and Cheng, “Addressing the Needs of d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Learners in Video-Based Learning.” 

Affiliate Professor Karrie Karahalios co-authored the paper, “Venire: A Machine Learning-Guided Panel Review System for Community Content Moderation.”

Assistant Professors Ismini Lourentzou and Yaoyao Liu, along with students from their labs, will present their research at the IEEE/CVF Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), held in Denver, Colorado, from June 3–7. iSchool faculty and staff will present their research at the Children's Literature Association (ChLA) annual conference, which will be held from May 28-30 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The theme of this year's conference is "Neighbors and Neighborhoods in Children's Literature, Media, and Culture."

Wang Group to present work at ICWSM 2026

Professor Dong Wang and PhD student Ruichen Yao will present their research at the International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM) 2026, which will take place May 27–29 in Los Angeles, bringing together researchers from around the world to study the intersection of social media, society, and technology. The conference is widely recognized as a premier venue for computational social science and social computing, with a highly selective acceptance process.

Lourentzou receives NSF CAREER Award

Assistant Professor Ismini Lourentzou has received a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award to develop the next generation of embodied AI agents, systems that can reason, explain, and adapt as they act in the physical world.

Raji invited to join UN Working Expert Group

PhD student Mubarak Raji has been invited to join the Working Expert Group on AI Governance Interoperability. This group operates under the United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies' new AI Governance for Humanity Lab. It supports the Secretary-General's High-level Advisory Body on AI by providing evidence-based analysis for the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, which will be held in July 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland.
