iSchool International: Studying abroad in Japan

Alex Soja looks into the distance atop a moutain in Japan

BSIS+DS student and undergraduate ambassador Alex Soja discusses his meaningful experience studying abroad in Japan, where he got the opportunity to live independently in Tokyo and gain a more global perspective.

Why did you decide to study abroad?
I wanted to experience life in a completely different culture, and I've always admired Japan's respect-based culture, architecture, and way of living.

Where did you study, and how long was the program?
I studied abroad at the University of Tokyo for one semester (4 months) through a program affiliated with the U. of I.

What was your experience like?
It was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. I got to live independently in Tokyo, navigate daily life in a new environment, and fully immerse myself in Japanese culture. I loved exploring different neighborhoods, seeing the contrast between modern city design and traditional temples, and learning how people communicate with so much respect and consideration. The experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me become more adaptable, confident, and open-minded.

My favorite part was experiencing everyday life in Tokyo, whether walking through the city and seeing the architecture or being surrounded by the culture built on centuries of respect and discipline.

Would you recommend study abroad to others, and if so, why?
Yes, 100 percent. It’s an amazing way to grow personally, gain a global perspective, and learn how to adapt in new situations while meeting people from around the world.

How has this experience benefited your academic and professional life?
It strengthened my independence, communication skills, and ability to work in diverse environments. It also made me more confident in unfamiliar situations, which is valuable both academically and professionally. During my time there, I also took courses like Economic Policy Analysis, Quantum Data Computing, Game Studies, and other fun classes!
