Assistant Professor Carol Tilley has been elected director of external relations for the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE). She will officially begin her work after the ALISE annual meeting in January, 2014.
Tilley has been professionally involved with ALISE since working on her doctoral degree at Indiana University. At that time, she participated as a junior scholar on the KALIPER (Kellogg - ALISE Information Professions and Education Renewal) Project, where she collected case study materials related to general curricular issues for several LIS programs and completed (with Daniel Callison), a study of the curricular changes in school librarian preparation programs.
"I am honored to have been elected by my peers, and I look forward to the challenges of serving ALISE as a member of its Board of Directors. As director of external relations, part of my work will be to help ALISE find innovative ways to forge stronger relationships with its members as well as with our colleagues in cognate disciplines and professional societies. I have much listening, learning, and leading to do in the coming year," said Tilley.
In recent years, Tilley has served on ALISE’s membership committee and was a recipient (along with GSLIS colleague Kathryn La Barre) of an OCLC / ALISE Library & Information Science Research Grant.
Tilley teaches courses in comics’ reader’s advisory, media literacy, and youth services librarianship. Part of her scholarship focuses on the intersection of young people, comics, and libraries, particularly in the United States during the mid-twentieth century. Her research has been published in journals including the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (JASIST), Information & Culture: A Journal of History, and Children’s Literature in Education. Her research on anti-comics advocate Fredric Wertham was featured in the New York Times and other media outlets.
