Master’s student Jhani Miller receives Emerging Leader Award

IMG_4360.JPG?itok=IvOe_VRX GSLIS master’s student Jhani Miller is the winner of the 2015 Emerging Leader Award given by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center. Each year, the center recognizes achievements made in a number of noteworthy areas by members of the LGBTQ campus community, including students, faculty, and staff.

Miller was nominated for the Emerging Leader Award by GSLIS Senior Research Scientist Martin Wolske. This award recognizes an Illinois student member of the LGBT community who demonstrates leadership potential.

Wolske presented the award to Miller at a ceremony on May 6, at which he spoke about her efforts to organize anti-bullying activities at high schools across the state in the form of gay-straight alliances and training for administrators. Wolske also pointed to Miller’s work in community informatics. As a graduate assistant with the Mix IT Up! initiative, she provided collection development and reader’s advisory services at the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club and the Juvenile Detention Center in Urbana.

GSLIS previously reported that Miller would receive the Outstanding Student Research Award, for which she was also nominated.
