GSLIS students present poster at ARCHIVES 2015

GSLIS master’s student Kayla Hays and incoming CAS student Anna Trammell (MS '15) will present their poster, "Towards a 'Fully Realized Institutional Repository': Exploring Collaboration Between Archives and IRs," at ARCHIVES 2015. This annual meeting of the Society of American Archivists will be held August 16-20 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Abstract: Clifford Lynch, whose definition of an institutional repository (IR) is cited in much of the literature surrounding them, described his vision for the future of the IR by saying, “A mature and fully realized Institutional repository will contain the intellectual works of faculty and students—both research and teaching materials—and also documentation of the activities of the institution itself in the form of records of events and performance and of the ongoing intellectual life of the institution.” This definition of a “fully realized IR” could serve as a mission statement for a university archives. Since these two entities are so clearly linked in their aims, how are archives and IRs working together? Will Lynch’s vision of a “fully realized institutional repository” materialize out of such a partnership? Many IRs are currently expanding their scope from traditional scholarly communication materials to items more commonly collected by archives. Our research focuses on the duplication of services and the opportunity for collaboration between the IR and university archives. By examining the successful partnerships and examples of archivists playing a leading role in the development, implementation, and maintenance of IRs, we hope to make a case for this mutually beneficial initiative.

Posters will be on display in the Exhibit Hall on Thursday, August 20 (5:15-7:15 p.m.), and on Friday, August 21 (9:45 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.). Students will be present to discuss their posters with attendees on Thursday from 5:15-7:15 p.m. and on Friday from 12:30-1:45 p.m.
