Three from GSLIS to speak at CIRN Conference

Three representatives from GSLIS will travel to Prato, Italy, next week to participate in the Community Informatics Research Network (CIRN) Conference. Held November 9-11, the theme of the 2015 conference is "Privilege, Information, Knowledge & Power: An endless dilemma?" The Center for Digital Inclusion is a sponsor of the event, and Senior Research Scientist Martin Wolske is a member of the organizing committee.

Wolske will lead a workshop session titled, "Toward a CIRN Statement on Ethics, Diversity, and Inclusion," in which attendees can provide feedback on a proposed statement on ethics, diversity, and inclusion. Colin Rhinesmith (PhD '14) and Kelvin White of the University of Oklahoma School of Library and Information Studies will lead the session with Wolske.

Master’s student Hailley Fargo and Wolske will present, "A New Kind of Digital Literacy Program: Discovering Viewpoints on Technology and Impact of the Digital Literacy for All Learners Project," as part of a panel discussion on education and digital literacy.

During the graduate colloquium portion of the conference, master’s student Emily Purcell will present her paper, "Crossing Borders: Building an International Student-Led Community Engagement Approach."

Nguyen receives Critical Language Scholarship

MSLIS student Christine Nguyen has been awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study Japanese this summer. She is one of four University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign students who received full scholarships to spend 8-10 weeks abroad and study one of 14 critical languages. The program is part of an initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages and cultural skills to enable them to contribute to U.S. economic competitiveness and national security.

iSchool researchers to present at CHI 2026

iSchool faculty and students will present their research at the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI 2026), which will be held from April 13–17 in Barcelona, Spain. The conference, considered the most prestigious in the field of Human-Computer Interaction, attracts researchers and practitioners from around the globe.

New app designed to improve conference experience

A new app developed by Associate Professor Yun Huang aims to make navigating conferences less work and more fun, so that attendees can meet others, discover fresh ideas, and "experience academic life as an exciting adventure." The app, PapersClaw.fun, will debut at the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI 2026), which will be held from April 13-17 in Barcelona, Spain.
