Undergraduate Research Symposium features iSchool researchers

Several iSchool undergraduate students will participate in the 17th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. During the event, visitors will learn about undergraduate research projects through oral and poster presentations, creative performances, and art exhibits. All are welcome to attend the symposium, which will be held on April 25 from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. in the Illini Rooms and South Lounge of the Illini Union. 

iSchool students and mentors include: 

  • Chloe Lee, BSIS sophomore, will present the poster, “Parental Depressive Symptoms: Associations with Child Negative and Positive Emotionality, from 9:00-10:15 a.m. in the South Lounge. 
  • BSIS +DS juniors Ashley Kim and Gwendolyn Slaughter and BSIS+DS sophomores Krishna Damania and Smriti Smriti will present “Master Dancer: Creating an Interactive Historical AI Avatar,” from 10:45-12:00 p.m. in Illini Room B.
  • BSIS seniors Ziwei Wang and Stefan Chu will present the poster, “Perceptions of Counterfactual-Driven Learning Recommendations,” from 12:15-1:30 p.m. in Illini Room C. Mentors: PhD student Haejin Lee and Assistant Professor Nigel Bosch

New app designed to improve conference experience

A new app developed by Associate Professor Yun Huang aims to make navigating conferences less work and more fun, so that attendees can meet others, discover fresh ideas, and "experience academic life as an exciting adventure." The app, PapersClaw.fun, will debut at the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI 2026), which will be held from April 13-17 in Barcelona, Spain.

Spectrum Scholar Spotlight: Nathaniel Allen Pila

Eight iSchool master's students have been named 2025–2026 Spectrum Scholars by the American Library Association. This "Spectrum Scholar Spotlight" series highlights the School's scholars. MSLIS student Nathaniel Allen Pila earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Mount Holyoke College.

iSchool participation in iConference 2026

The following iSchool faculty and students will participate in iConference 2026, which will be held virtually from March 23–26 and physically from March 29–April 2 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The theme of this year's conference is "Information Literacies, Authenticity and Use: The Move Towards a Digitally Enlightened Society."

Wang receives AccessComputing funding for video game project

Informatics PhD student Olive Wang has been awarded a minigrant by AccessComputing, an organization that supports people with disabilities in computing. The $5,000 grant will support Wang's work on the video game Loadouts, which teaches players why accessibility is important. In the game, players learn why video games are inaccessible for players who are low-vision and how accessibility features such as high contrast, auditory cues, and multimodality can be effective.

Hassan and Bashir receive distinguished paper award

A paper co-authored by PhD student Muhammad Hassan and Associate Professor Masooda Bashir received the Distinguished Paper Award at the Workshop on Security and Privacy in Standardized IoT, which was held last month in San Diego, California, in conjunction with the Network and Distributed System Security (NDSS) Symposium 2026.
