Ostman, Sullivan receive ACRL Student Scholarships

GSLIS master's students Ray Ostman and Madison Sullivan have been selected as two of fifteen recipients nationwide to receive a 2015 ACRL Library School Student Scholarship. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide opportunities for students to participate in an Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) professional development experience and learn more about current issues in academic and research libraries. Each award includes complimentary registration and a stipend to attend the ACRL 2015 conference, which will be held March 25-28 in Portland, Oregon.

"Attending ACRL is a great opportunity to be exposed to a wide array of topics covered by the sessions, learn from the conference presenters, and engage with academic librarians," said Ostman. Her studies are focused on academic librarianship, instructional design and technology, and digital humanities.

Sullivan's academic interests include include special collections, digital preservation, and user services. "I look forward to connecting with fellow students and LIS professionals interested in the future of academic librarianship. The ACRL Conference will address many of the important discussions and debates taking place in academic libraries across the nation by providing an exciting forum for collaboration," she said.

Vaez Afshar selected as 2026 APT Student Scholar

The Association for Preservation Technology (APT) International has named Informatics PhD student Sepehr Vaez Afshar as a 2026 Student Scholar. Established in 1985, the APT Student Scholarship annually recognizes ten students worldwide whose work advances preservation technology through innovative and impactful approaches.

Stier selected for I Love My Librarian Award

Adjunct Lecturer Zachary Stier has been selected for a 2026 I Love My Librarian Award. Honorees were recognized for their outstanding public service accomplishments.

Nguyen receives Critical Language Scholarship

MSLIS student Christine Nguyen has been awarded a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study Japanese this summer. She is one of four University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign students who received full scholarships to spend 8-10 weeks abroad and study one of 14 critical languages. The program is part of an initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages and cultural skills to enable them to contribute to U.S. economic competitiveness and national security.
