Underwood joins iSchool faculty

The iSchool is pleased to announce that Ted Underwood has joined the faculty, effective August 16. Professor Underwood also holds a joint appointment with the Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Get to know Catherine Mardula, MS student

For master’s student Catherine Mardula, librarianship is the family business. She’s following in the footsteps of her mother, an iSchool alumna, as well as her aunt and grandmother, all of whom are librarians. Catherine is pursuing special collections librarianship and—thanks to her Alternative Spring Break experience at the University of St. Andrews—cataloging.

Blauvelt and Kinnaman complete user interface, digital preservation projects at Oxford

Two iSchool master's students undertook placements at Oxford University this summer and presented their work at a seminar earlier this month. The placements were part of the Oxford-Illinois Digital Library Placement Program, an ongoing collaboration between Illinois and Oxford. Catherine Blauvelt (MS '16) and Alex Kinnaman spent six weeks at the Oxford e-Research Centre and Bodleian Libraries, respectively.

Hubert (MS '88) receives ILA Librarian of the Year Award

Tina Hubert (MS '88), director of the Six Mile Regional Library District located in Granite City, Illinois, is the 2016 recipient of the Illinois Library Association Librarian of the Year Award. The award recognizes a librarian's distinguished service and leadership in Illinois libraries. The award is sponsored by Sikich.

Stodden to address changes in computing, information fields at National Academies workshop

How are changes in computing driving interest in related fields among undergraduates? How will an influx of graduates with computer science and information science skills affect the computing workforce? Associate Professor Victoria Stodden will address questions like these in a panel discussion next week at the Workshop on the Growth of Computer Science Undergraduate Enrollments.

Celebrate comics and fandom with Carol Tilley at Urbana fest this weekend

Associate Professor Carol Tilley will speak this Saturday, August 13, at the Comics & Fandom Fest in Urbana, hosted by The Urbana Free Library (TUFL) and other local sponsors. Events will be held at the library and around town throughout the day. Tilley will give a presentation on great women in comics at 4:00 p.m. in the Lewis Auditorium at TUFL.

iSchool faculty, staff, and students will participate in the upcoming International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) World Library and Information Congress in Columbus, Ohio, on August 13-19. This annual conference brings together LIS professionals and students from more than one hundred and twenty countries and provides opportunities for networking and professional development.
